My bike had not been started since washing it after our last race 85 days ago. Turned the fuel on, cycled it to TDC and it fired on the second kick with a crisper sound. We run Sunoco 110 and Maxima 927 @ 36/1.
My 87 490 is modified with pipe, porting, balanced crank and a few other internal goodies. But I could feel a noticeable difference with throttle response and a harder hit at the bottom of the midrange thru early top end. It makes a difference!
I’ve been racing moto since 79 and big bores since 82, and had been a mechanic at the national and supercross level. While I’m much older now and have forgotten many tricks, I still like to ride a hot rod bike. Your Mondo Coil is a winner, easier starting and a harder crisper hit.

I’ve got a 1987 yz490 completely standard internals apart from the head mod and FMF pipe.
I was running the stock coil with stock carb settings the bike is a UK bike as well it usually started 3-4 kick doing the routine in which is needed to start these then the power was a lot as expected with the 490s.
However, I swapped over to the Mondo Coil it’s now second kick every time runs sweet and is a crisper burn definitely a winner!
